Portfolio Clinic Tips

1. Bring Your Work

As much as the company representatives are visionaries, they can’t analyse your work by looking at your nice outfit. Bring a Laptop, DVD or portfolio for them to look at.

2. Be Cool

No need to be nervous, it’s not an interview. All you’ll get is frank, valuable advice. If you need camomile tea/Valium/a slap round the chops to calm down, do what it takes.

3. Have a Chin Wag

Have a nosey at other portfolios. These are your peers, you’re all in it together. You can at least make friends before you steal their ideas.

4. Have a Drink

There’s a free drink for the first 25 people that buy their entry. It’s a proven fact that people are more interesting when they’ve had a drink.

5. Research

Find out a bit about the companies that will be there. Not only will you flatter their egos but you’ll get to talk to the people most relevant to you.

6. Bring Your Mates Along

Who else is going to embarrass you for eternity by retelling the story of when you described your work as a post-modern, self reflexive, cry for help?

7. Strut Your Stuff in Every Format

Show your work in all the forms that it comes, (DVD, website, portfolio, parchment).

8. Make Contacts

Swapping tips/jokes/saliva with the companies and attendees is the best way to get into the oh-so-exclusive media industry. Pull out your best charm offensive.

9. Bring the Wired Sussex Staff a Gift

We like shoes and mini chedders.

10. It’s Not a Real Clinic

Please don’t get your rash out.
